Das TOTAS-Team fertigt mit dem 1-Meter-Instrument des Izana-Observatoriums in Tenerifa Aufnahmen an und durchsucht diese dann mit einer selbst geschriebenen Software nach Asteroiden und Kometen. Die Beobachtungszeit wurde von der ESA zur Verfügung gestellt.
Kometen- und Asteroiden-Kandidaten werden manuell eingeschätzt und bestätigt oder abgelehnt. Rafal Reszelewski war in diesem Fall der Glückliche, der den Kometen als erstes gesehen hat. Die Software zum Durchsuchen der Bilder schrieb Matthias Busch aus Heppenheim.
